Optionality

Опциональность · Taleb optionality

The asymmetric right (not obligation) to take advantage of good outcomes without being trapped by bad ones.

Plain explanation

An option is a position where the bad scenario is bounded and the good scenario is open. Build a portfolio of small, cheap options and you become exposed to upside without being exposed to ruin. Most of life's big wins come from positions held cheaply with optionality.

Why it matters

Forecasting is hard. Optionality lets you win without forecasting. It's the practical answer to the Black Swan.

Practical example

Side projects done in evenings: limited downside (a few hours), open upside (could become a business, network, learning, reputation).

How to use
  1. 1Continuously seed options. Be unwilling to commit big upfront; willing to commit big once optionality has paid off.
  2. 2Reject «all-in» positions where the bad tail destroys you.
