Positive asymmetry (convexity)

Положительная асимметрия · Асимметрия риска · Convexity bias · Асиметрія

Shape your bets so the downside is small and the upside is large. The asymmetry - not the probability - is what generates positive long-run results.

Plain explanation

Forget «what's the probability?». Ask «what's the magnitude of each outcome?». A 30%-probability bet with 1× downside and 100× upside is wildly better than a 70%-probability bet with 5× downside and 2× upside.

Why it matters

Probability thinking dominates Mediocristan. Magnitude thinking wins in Extremistan. Asymmetry is the bridge.

Practical example

Buying lottery tickets is bad asymmetry (capped upside, near-certain loss). Buying a call option with very limited cost on a low-probability event is good asymmetry.

How to use
  1. 1Always sketch both tails. Refuse bets where the bad tail is unbounded.
