Estimating a case by reasoning from inside its own story and details - usually too optimistic, usually overconfident.

Plain explanation

The inside view sees the people, the plan, the milestones, the team energy. It feels like it should know more than any general statistic. Almost always, it doesn't. Specific detail produces false precision, not better accuracy.

Why it matters

Inside view isn't useless - it's a complementary signal, not a substitute. The mistake is using it as the only signal.

Practical example

A team plans by listing every task and adding up the hours. Outside view of similar projects says they will miss by 60%. The list of tasks felt rigorous; it wasn't.

How to use
  1. 1Use the inside view for execution detail, not for total estimates.
  2. 2Whenever you find yourself reasoning «but our case is special», flag it. Often that's where the inside view smuggles in overconfidence.
